Achy Breaky Paper Mache-ky Heart

Oh my-lanta!  This project was a pain in my neck!  Love hurts I guess.  I REALLY wanted to make something Valentine's Day related because everything I saw at the stores was rather kitchy.  So I've had this huge ball of twine for years now just sitting in my junk drawer.  Doesn't everyone?  I guarantee you, twine in a junk drawer is like carrots in vomit.  (sorry to those of you with weak constitutions)  It's there even if you didn't buy it or eat it.  I think my ball of twine came with the house.  Anywho, I had the twine and I'm really into rustic right now for some reason.  So I decided to put my twine to work for me in the form of a paper mache heart.  Ambitious; I know.

I've never made a paper mache project in my life!  Yeah, my early years were paper mache free.  I must have been absent from school that day or week or year.  I had no idea of the following: 1. how to make paper mache paste. -gross by the way. 2. how messy the darn thing would be. - we're talking all over the place.  3. how to make a form on which to place the paper mache.- please refer to exhibit a the photo.  4. how loooonnnnnnggggg it would take to dry. - a full day and that's with oven exposure.  5. how nasty it smells.-still lingering in my nose hairs! I needed research and so I set off to google all the info.  Thank the Lord all mighty for internet access for without that guidance I might have mixed up some poisonous concoxion!

Here's the form I came up with:  scrunched up newspaper to make a heart shape and proceed to cover that in gross muck paste.

After the paper mache "heart" was dry, I had the daunting task of wrapping the whole thing with twine.  You may have noticed that the word heart is in quotes, the reason for this is my heart is sooo rustic it kind of looks jacked up!  I messed up did this on purpose to create the "look".  I painstakingly wrapped the twine and used my hot glue gun every inch or so.  This process took an amazing 5 hours!  Not a typo! FIVE ENTIRE HOURS!  My husband kept asking me to throw in the towel but I was invested; emotionally and physically.  This was a test, a battle really, between me and my PROJECT.   I would not be defeated.  And thus, at 2:00 am Eastern Standard Time, I managed to glue the last piece of twine to that God forsaken paper mache heart!

I should've probably given up but it's my first paper mache!

Now I have no idea where to put it.  (Hubby says trash.  -__-  He thinks he's funny.)

  11. Oh my gosh! I love it. I am curious how big it is. 'Cause I think it will be really cool rather large. I am guessing it is a bit bigger since it took so long to cover. I love, love, love jute things and this would look so awesome in my house.

  12. I'm glad my first paper mache project got such a good response! I'll be sure to try it more often. @Christie- It's about 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide and 3 inches thick. I actually ended up putting it in my foyer on a picture stand. It's grown on me. 8)

  14. Very cute! :-) I confess, I'm a little afraid of paper mache since my husband, who's a theatrical tech director, got the brilliant (*not!*) idea to create a whole set out of paper mache to save on lumber costs and be green. Way...too...much...work!

  17. I love to paper mache. But have fallen in love with paper clay. It's less messy and I love the end result.
